Rooted intentions: setting the tone for 2025
As the new year begins, many of us feel the pressure to hit the ground running. The narrative often suggests that January is the time to overhaul our lives, set ambitious goals, and strive for rapid transformation. But what if we approached this season differently? What if, instead of forcing profound changes in the middle of winter, we aligned our intentions with the natural rhythms of life?
In the depth of winter, nature itself is still and reflective. Trees conserve energy, animals hibernate, and the earth rests, preparing for renewal in the spring. January invites us to do the same—to pause, reflect, and set the groundwork for growth to come. This season isn’t about rushing to fix what we think is broken. Instead, it’s an opportunity to honor our journey, celebrate our strengths, and intentionally plant seeds for what we hope to cultivate in the months ahead.
Rethinking the New Year: Why Big Resolutions Often Fail
The tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions often stems from a deficit mindset: “I need to fix this,” or “I should stop doing that.” While the desire for self-improvement is natural, starting the year with an overwhelming list of goals can lead to burnout, frustration, and feelings of inadequacy.
Instead, consider a more sustainable approach. Align your intentions with what truly matters to you, focusing on growth, joy, and creativity. Ask yourself: “What brings me alive?” and “What do I want to nurture in the coming year?” By shifting from pain-based resolutions to strength-based intentions, you’re more likely to create lasting, meaningful change.
The Power of Visualization: Meeting Your Future Self
One powerful way to set intentions is through visualization. During our recent workshop, participants were guided on a meditative journey along a symbolic path, representing their transition from 2024 to 2025. Along this path, they reflected on what they were leaving behind, the lessons they’re carrying forward, and the vision they hold for the year ahead.
At the end of the path, they arrived at a dwelling—a representation of their 2025 life. There, they met their future selves, who embodied the essence of the life they aspire to live. Through vivid details—the colors of the surroundings, the warmth of the dwelling, the presence of loved ones—participants were able to connect deeply with their goals and values, setting intentions rooted in clarity and authenticity.
Practical Steps for Setting Rooted Intentions
Here are a few steps you can take to set meaningful intentions for 2025:
Reflect on 2024: What did you accomplish or learn? What challenges helped you grow? Consider what you want to leave behind and what you’d like to carry forward.
Set Strength-Based Intentions: Build on what’s already working in your life. For example, “Expand my creativity by dedicating time to painting each week” feels more empowering than “Stop wasting time.”
Honor Your Unique Rhythm: January doesn’t have to be the month for action. Use this time to create a vision and set intentions, knowing you’ll have the energy to take action when the time feels right—perhaps in spring, when the world begins to bloom again.
Visualize Your Future Self: Picture your life in 2025. What does it look like? How do you feel? Who are you surrounded by? Visualization can help clarify what’s most important and inspire small, meaningful steps forward.
